Basle earned a much-deserved draw through a combination of work, poor refereeing, woefully sloppy defending from United and outstanding forward play from Streller and Frei. Had their finishing in the first half been of the same standard as the rest of their attacking play Basle could have been out of sight by half-time.
As it was, their positive outlook – and United’s continued waywardness – turned around the half-time deficit, and went ahead with a rather fortuitous penalty. Fortune favours the bold it is said, and that was certainly true up to that point – but then the Basle manager made a crucial error; he stopped attacking and decided to hold what he had, allowing United to spend the final ten minutes constantly attacking.
Despite the referee managing to obstruct United players on no fewer than three occasions when they were on the attack, Basle’s regression into negativity brought the inevitable consequence when Young scored the equaliser with an inch perfect header.
A very good result for Basle,less so for United – though not calamitous – and a very watchable game all round.
