David Moyes made a winning Premier League start as Manchester United manager with the champions cruising to a comfortable opening day victory at Swansea City.

Swansea’s early good work was undone as Van Persie and Danny Welbeck struck twice inside two minutes just after the half-hour and United were never again under serious threat.

Liverpool 1-0 Stoke

Liverpool secured their first opening-day victory at Anfield since 2001 as goalkeeper Simon Mignolet marked his debut with a dramatic late penalty save to deny Stoke a point.

Daniel Sturridge scored the only goal of the game eight minutes before half-time, drilling a low shot into the bottom right-hand corner of the net.

Arsenal 1-3 Aston Villa

Christian Benteke scored twice and Antonio Luna added a third as Aston Villa came from behind to stun Arsenal at Emirates Stadium on the opening day.

Olivier Giroud opened the scoring, but Benteke headed an equaliser after Wojciech Szczesny saved his penalty.

Benteke controversially put Villa ahead from the spot after a foul by Laurent Koscielny, who was later shown a second yellow card for a mistimed challenge.

New signing Luna raced clear to seal Arsenal’s woe with a low strike.

Norwich 2-2 Everton

Norwich’s record signing Ricky van Wolfswinkel’s superb header rescued a point in a thrilling opening-day encounter with Everton.

The Canaries took the lead against the run of play after the break when Steven Whittaker shot home from a tight angle after his initial strike hit the post.

Ross Barkley capped a superb display to level from long range and Seamus Coleman tapped in to make it 2-1.
