Elano reduced the deficit with a penalty after Queudrue’s foul on Benjani which he was sent off for. Gary McSheffrey added a third from the spot after he was fouled by Sun Jihai. With so many of the Premier League’s strugglers bunched up at the bottom it was vital for Blues to get a win. And it would have been a massive injustice if they had finished the 90 minutes having not picked up all three points – although if Benjani’s shot had gone in instead of hitting the post, then there could have been a different outcome.
