Head-to-head

Roberto MartinezSunderland’s victory over Everton at the Stadium of Light in April ended a run of 16 Premier League games without a win in this fixture (D4, L12).

Everton have won their last six league matches at home against Sunderland and scored 20 goals in the process.

This fixture is the 11th Boxing Day fixture between the clubs and the third during the Premier League era. Everton won 5-0 in the only previous encounter played at Goodison Park on 26 December, with Don Hutchinson scoring twice.

Everton

Everton must avoid defeat against Sunderland and Southampton to go unbeaten at home in the league for a whole calendar year. They have only managed this feat on three occasions (1894, 1939, 1962).

Roberto Martinez’s side have accrued 34 points so far during the 2013-14 campaign, two less than his Wigan team picked up throughout the whole of last season.

The Toffees have not lost in six Premier League fixtures on Boxing Day since a 4-0 defeat at Aston Villa in 2005 (W3, D3).

Romelu Lukaku scored three goals in two Premier League appearances against Sunderland last season while on loan at West Brom.

Sunderland

Sunderland are on a six-match winless streak (D3, L3), their worst run of form since an eight-game spell without a win at the start of the season.

The Black Cats have the league’s 11th-best record against clubs in the top half (W2, D1, L6).

Those wins came against Newcastle and Manchester City, their only victories this season.

Sunderland have picked up just three away points this season (D3, L5), the equal fewest along with Crystal Palace.

This is only the second time in 12 years that Sunderland have played an away fixture on Boxing Day.
