Head-to-head

The home side are unbeaten in the last 10 Premier League fixtures between these two clubs.

Newcastle are on a six-match unbeaten run at home to Villa, who last won on Tyneside in 2005.

Villa have conceded 10 goals and scored only once on their last three visits.

Newcastle

The Magpies have won five of their last six home league games.

Newcastle are looking to win their first two home matches of the season for the first time since 2000.

Papiss Cisse scored his first ever Premier League goal in February’s 2-1 home win against Villa. Only Wayne Rooney (14) has since scored more goals in the division than Cisse (13).

Newcastle are two goals away from becoming the sixth club to score 1,000 Premier League goals.

Aston Villa

Villa have only ever lost their two opening matches of a Premier League season twice before, during the 1997-98 and 2002-03 campaigns. Their top-flight club record of successive defeats at the start of a season was four in 1997-98.

They are on a three-match losing streak. They last lost four in a row between March and April 2009 – under Martin O’Neill.

Villa have failed to win their last 12 Premier League matches. If they fail to win in Tyneside they will set a new unwanted top-flight club record.

The Villans have not scored more than once in their last 10 league matches. It’s their longest run without netting at least twice in a match since 1999.

Ben Arfa has looked good this season. Aston Villa did fight hard for this match, but I just am not quite sure what Lambert was thinking in moving there. I suppose it’s still hit or miss whether it will be Norwich or Aston Villa that go down.
