Shola Ameobi marked his first start for Newcastle since 21 December with a goal as the hosts held Sunderland to a draw in an enthralling Tyne-Wear derby.

A frantic end-to-end tie could have gone either way, but it was left to Ameobi’s penalty to seal the draw after Steed Malbranque fouled Steven Taylor.

That came after Djibril Cisse’s opener, the Frenchman beating the offside trap to score at the second attempt.
