Mick “The Bottler” McCarthy will undoubtedly use this win to try to justify his craven capitulation at Old Trafford earlier in the week, but it won’t wash.
Burnley have an absolutely appalling away record, the 3 points here were a “gimme”, and playing United on Tuesday with most of the first team would have made no difference to this result.
These 3 points were always there for the taking, but Roy Hodgson and Fulham showed what can be done with a determined side against a United team in defensive disarray.
McCarthy has, in effect, thrown away the chance of extra points and a glorious result at Old Trafford – even a draw would have been a bonus – as well as depriving his top players the opportunity to play in the biggest league game of their careers.
McCarthy has not “gained anything with the 3 points off Burnley; he simply guaranteed that they would get nothing from the Utd game – not even pride.
Mick McCarthy, go hang your head in shame; there should be no place in the Premiership for players or managers who give up without a fight.
